Juunikuine ROAD TRIP. GIGANTIDE AVENÜÜ,  California.
SEKVOIAD on maailma suurimad ja vanimad puud. See ilmaime oli mul siiani nägemata. Ega midagi, tagasiteel Põhja-Californiast, Eva ja Johni pulmast, võtsime ammu plaanitud sekvoia-tuuri ette. Ühe blogipostitusega seda teemat ei kata, puud ja muljed võrdselt hiiglaslikud.

Avenue of The Giants on 50 kilomeetrine jupp vana California rannikumaanteed - Highway 101 nimeks. Uus Hwy 101 on hulga laiem ja sirgem, aga muidu kulgeb Gigantide Avenüüga suhteliselt paralleelselt. Kuidas seda viitekümmend kilomeetrit  kirjeldada, see on omaette küsimus. Noh, ütleme siis nii, et tee kulgeb metsa vahel:) Mets, tõsi küll, tavapärasest veidi erinev. Sekvoiad, olles ühed vanimad elusorganismid Maal (vanimail turjal 1200-1800 aastat), on lisaks ka suurimad  - üle saja meetri kõrged, tüve läbimõõt kuni 9 meetrit. Ühesõnaga - VÄGA SUURED puud, kui tagasihoidlikult väljenduda. Ja mitte et üks puu on suur, või kümme, või sada. Kogu see puudekraam on seal täiesti skaalast väljas. 'Normaalne' mets (Eesti oma, Oregoni oma) ulatuks sekvoiametsale vaid nö. vöökohani.

 Võrratu, võrratu lõhn neil hiiglapuudel - natukene justkui kadakat, natukene mändi ja kuuske...lisame ohtralt niiskust (rannik!), soojust (juunikuu!) ning saamegi  väga umbkaudse, küündimatu kirjelduse. Ma oleks sinna sekvoiasaludesse heameelega jäänudki, tõesõna. Aga noh, nuriseda ei saa - kolm päeva veetsime sekvoia-vöös. Ranniku-sekvoiad kasvavad väga kitsa (8-75 km), 750 kilomeetri pikkuse ribana Põhja-California rannikul, väike jupp jagub meile Loode-Oregoni kah.

These trees are also among the oldest living things on Earth. Before commercial logging and clearing began by the 1850s, this massive tree occurred naturally in an estimated 2,100,000 acres (8,500 km2) along much of coastal California (excluding southern California where rainfall is not sufficient) and the southwestern corner of coastal Oregon within the United States.
